Skillshare is an American online learning community for people who want to learn on instructional videos. Courses that do not have accreditation are available by subscription.
Most courses focus on interaction rather than lectures, the main goal being to complete the project. The main categories of courses include creative arts, design, entrepreneurship, lifestyle and technology.
Michael Karnyanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong launched Skillshare in New York in November 2010; the site was launched in April 2011. In August 2011, Skillshare raised $ 3.1 million. US to fund Serie A under the direction of Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital. At the end of 2013, Skillshare raised $ 4.65 million. US funding and $ 6 million until February 2014 were co-financed by Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital. Total funding reached $ 10 million.
Skillshare has launched 15 independent online courses with students who have collaborated to complete the project. By November 2013, he had completed more than 250 courses and established his own School of Design.
Skillshare collaborated with Levi’s to launch the MakeOurMark school in October 2013, focusing on individual creativity through photography, tattooing and various forms of illustration.
In March 2014, Skillshare switched to a membership model for $ 9.95 per month. Later that year, the company announced a new open platform where anyone can be a course instructor, and the possibility of free membership to view a limited amount of class content per month.
In May 2016, Skillshare raised $ 12 million to finance Series B. In July 2018, the company raised another $ 28 million to finance Series C ($ 20 million in equity and $ 8 million in venture debt).
As of March 2019, more than 27,000 premium classes and more than 2,000 free classes are available on Skillshare. The platform introduced the Group feature, which allows participants to communicate with other creators, share work and take skills to the next level by participating in discussions and tips.
